Whether you’re a full-time carer or simply trying to support a loved one from a distance, they are there for you.
Caring for a loved one with dementia can be incredibly rewarding – but also deeply challenging. Here are five gentle, effective ways to reduce the pressure on everyone involved:
You don’t have to do it alone. Reach out to friends, family, neighbours, or local charities. Even small acts of help (like someone doing the shopping or staying for an hour) make a difference.
Routine can be a huge comfort for people with dementia. Regular times for meals, walks, and rest help reduce confusion and agitation.
Short, clear sentences, calm tones, and open body language can help avoid misunderstandings. Patience truly is key.
Use labels on drawers or photos on doors to support memory. Familiar music, smells, and cherished belongings can bring comfort and calm.
You matter too. Take breaks. Talk to someone. Use respite care if needed. A healthy carer is an effective carer – and burnout helps no one.
If dementia has entered your home, please know there is help, hope, and a whole community standing beside you. The Alzheimer’s Society continues to be a beacon of support, offering practical resources and emotional strength every step of the way.
